Getting Started on Your Personal Web Site

Everyone should have an online identity. And I don’t mean just creating a Facebook account. Having a Facebook account or any other social network profile is good, but in the end is not something you own. If you’re really serious about having a real online identity that you can call your own, then you have to start creating your own personal website.

The first thing is buying and registering your domain. A domain is a URL like “yoursite.com”. This can be tricky, because you’re going to have to be creative about the name since there are literally millions of domains already created and owned. Some people even create domain names just for the purpose of reselling them for a higher price. They call this domain squatting, but that’s a whole different blog post. But once you find the name that you like, be it a .com, a .net, or .org, you can start with the other stuff.

Next up is finding a hosting provider. There are a many so you’ll have to do some deep research to find the best fit for you. By the way, most hosting providers offer the domain registration.

Then there’s the decision of using some type of “platform”. Since most personal websites are blogs, there are some good blogging platforms to choose from. But you don’t have to go with a blog if you just want some type of online portfolio or just a place where people can find about you. Depending on your level of knowledge of how the web works, you can make a pretty simple website with just a bit of HTML(Hypertext Markup Language).

After you decide what you want to share on the web, like phone numbers, address, email, and other ways to contact you, you’re pretty much set to have a personal website.
